แมลงช้าง เป็นแมลงในอันดับ Neuroptera ในโลกนี้มีประมาณ 1,500 -2,000 ชนิด ได้มีการวิเคราะห์ชื่อแล้วประมาณ 60 ชนิด แต่ในเขตเอเชียตะวันออก (อาฟกานิสถาน ปากีสถาน อินเดีย เนปาล พม่า ไทย ไต้หวัน ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย และอินโดนีเซีย) พบ 170 ชนิด ในอันดับนี้มีหลายวงศ์ เช่น มีเพียง 1 วงศ์ ที่ในระยะตัวหนอนอาศัยอยู่ในหลุมทราย คอยจับเหยื่อที่ตกลงหลุมมาเป็นอาหาร คือแมลงช้างในวงศ์ Myrmeleontidae. หรือเรียกว่า antlion (คำว่า Antlion มาจาก ตัวอ่อนที่มีลักษณะคล้ายมด ลักษณะการกินมีการกัดเหยื่อคล้ายสิงโต) ในประเทศไทยมีการศึกษาแมลงในวงศ์นี้น้อยมาก มีรายงานการพบและทราบชื่อแล้วเพียง 2 ชนิดเท่านั้น
ถิ่นอาศัย
ระยะตัวอ่อนอาศัยอยู่ในทรายหรือดินละเอียด อาจอยู่ใต้หลังคาหรือในที่ไม่มีฝนตกหรือน้ำค้างตกใส่ จะสร้างหลุมเป็นรูปกรวย มักพบในพื้นที่ป่าหรือพื้นที่ชนบท แต่ไม่ค่อยพบในเขตเมือง
อาหาร
แมลงขนาดเล็ก ส่วนใหญ่แล้วเป็นมด แมงมุมขนาดเล็ก
ลักษณะนิสัย
ตัวอ่อนจะใช้เดินถอยหลังเพื่อมุดตัวลงไปใต้พื้นทราย แล้วใช้ขากรรไกรโยนทรายขึ้นมาหลุม จนหลุมมีลักษณะเป็นรูปกรวย โดย ตัวอ่อนของแมลงช้างจะซ่อนตัวอยู่ใต้ก้นหลุม เพื่อดักจับเหยื่อที่เป็นแมลงขนาดเล็ก เมื่อแมลงตกลงไปในหลุมจะไม่สามารถขึ้นมาได้ เพราะทรายในบริเวณขอบหลุมจะยึดตัวกันหลวม ๆ เมื่อแมลงพยายามเดินขึ้นมาจะลื่นไถลตามทรายตกลงสู่ก้นหลุม ตัวอ่อนแมลงช้างที่อยู่ก้นหลุมก็จะใช้ขากรรไกรกัดและดูดเหยื่อเป็นอาหาร
วิธีขุดหลุม
มันจะเดินถอยหลัง ใช้ก้นไถพื้นทรายเป็นวง และใช้หัวและขากรรไกรที่เหมือนเขี้ยว เหวี่ยงสะบัดทรายที่ขึ้นมาอยู่ข้างบนออกไปเรื่อย ๆ ก็จะได้หลุมรูปกรวยภายในเวลาอย่างน้อย 15 นาที หลุมของแมลงช้างจะมีความสัมพันธ์ตามขนาดของตัวอ่อนแมลงช้าง
จะเห็นว่าขอบในของที่ดูเป็นเขี้ยว อันที่จริงคือขากรรไกร จะมีเป็นหนามแหลมซึ่งมีรูเล็ก ๆ อยู่ สำหรับปล่อยพิษ เข้าไปในตัวมดที่เป็นเหยื่อของมัน และดูดน้ำในตัวมดเป็นอาหาร จนตัวมดแห้งเหลือแต่เปลือก มันก็จะเหวี่ยงซากมดออกไปจากหลุมของมัน และเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับรอเหยื่อรายใหม่
เราเข้าใจว่า “แมลงช้าง” มันเป็นตัวอย่างนี้เท่านั้น ก็เป็นการเข้าใจผิด เพราะนี่มันเป็นเพียง “ตัวอ่อน” larva ที่ฟักออกจากไข่เท่านั้น แต่เป็นช่วงชีวิตที่ยาวนานที่สุดของมัน นับตั้งแต่ออกจากไข่ เป็น”ตัวอ่อน” อย่างที่เห็นนี้ ทำหลุมดักมดหากินอยู่ในดิน นานถึง 2 – 3 ปี กว่าจะเข้าสู่ระยะเป็นดักแด้ ที่ฝังลึกลงไปใต้ดินถึง 10 ซม. ฟักตัวอยู่ 2 – 3 อาทิตย์ จึงออกจากดักแด้ คลานขึ้นมาจากใต้ดิน มีปีก และภายใน 20 นาทีก็บินไปหาคู่ผสมพันธ์กัน ตัวที่โตเต็มที่แล้ว มีทั้งชนิดที่คล้ายผีเสื้อ และที่คล้ายแมลงปอ แต่เวลาเกาะปีกทั้งสองข้างจะไม่ขนานกัน แต่จะทำมุมแหลมเป็นรูปตัววี ปีกมีเส้นเป็นร่างแห สังเกตความแตกต่างกันได้ตรงที่ “แมลงช้าง” จะมีปลายหนวดเป็นปุ่ม และเป็นตัวที่ชอบออกมาตอนเย็นหรือกลางคืน พบในที่มีแสงนิออน หรือตามกระจกหน้าต่างที่มีแสงไฟสว่าง ตัวเต็มวัยจะหาคู่ผสมพันธ์แล้วก็ไปวางไข่ไว้ในดินที่แห้งร่วนต่อไป ตัวเต็มวัย มีอายุประมาณ 30- 45 วัน

ประโยชน์
แมลงช้างมีบทบาทสำคัญในระบบนิเวศ โดยเป็นผู้ล่า ซึ่งถือเป็นการควบคุมแมลงชนิดอื่นให้มีจำนวนเหมาะสม ช่วยในการสร้างสมดุลในระบบนิเวศ
